LPI’s Wyckoff and MSHDA’s Tischler lead session on placemaking implementation at the 2015 Small Town & Rural Development Conference

Each year, the Michigan Rural Council welcomes regional, national and international speakers and presenters to the Small Town & Rural Development Conference whose expertise and passion make this event the premier conference for rural community development in Michigan. This annual conference provides an opportunity to share, learn and connect with leaders across Michigan working to support and promote vibrant rural communities. The 2015 Michigan Small Town & Rural Development Conference took place April 13-15, 2015, in Thompsonville.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2015, the Land Policy Institute’s senior associate director, Mark Wyckoff, co-led the session, called “Just Do It! Practical Implementation of Placemaking in Your Community” with Jim Tischler, director of community development at the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. Also assisting were:

  • Julie Gardner from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority,
  • Luke Forrest and Julie Hales Smith from the Michigan Municipal League, and
  • Katharine Czarnecki and Marilyn Crowley from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Attendees had the opportunity to interact with these and other experienced State agency staff, and other conference participants to identify practical, doable next steps to move planning placemaking projects forward in communities, both big and small.
